Identifying Water Damage and Leaks

What does the beginning of a water damage ceiling look like?

Water Stains or Discoloration

If your ceiling has light water stains or discoloration, it's an early sign of water damage. These stains may start out as yellowish or brownish spots and gradually darken over time if the leak is not addressed.

Sagging Ceiling

Severe water damage may cause the ceiling to sag. This happens when the drywall or plaster becomes saturated with water and loses its structural integrity. Sagging ceilings pose a significant safety hazard and should be addressed immediately.

Bubbles or Blisters

Water damage can create bubbles or blisters on the surface of the ceiling. These blisters are air pockets trapped beneath the drywall or plaster due to water accumulation.

Cracking or Peeling Paint

Ceiling water damage can lead to cracking or peeling paint. As the drywall expands and contracts with moisture changes, the paint layer may become stressed and detach from the surface.

Musty Odor

A musty odor is another indication of water damage. Water promotes mold growth, which releases an unpleasant smell. If you notice a musty odor in your home, it's important to inspect the ceiling and other areas for potential water leaks.
